How was the Author Fest?

So Saturday afternoon, I made my way to Enid, Oklahoma, to the annual Enid Author Fest. This was a great experience. Better than before. This year, we took the button machine along with us and offered a button to each visiting guest.

With this strategy, we were able to offer more business cards and introduce Shiver and Fears to more visitors. That day, we had only 2 remaining buttons and 5 business cards. WOW! But I guess the question is how many books were sold?

Well, as you may have heard somewhere from Shiver and Fears, we enter the book signing with 12 books: 4 "Locked in the Forgotten Library" books, 4 "The Dangers of Love" books, and 4 "Johnny and the Barking Puppy" books.

Shiver and Fears was a hit this year. All 8 books were sold within the weekend! Now, what about the young children's book? Well, Mason's book is slowly making progress. It's strange. At the Author Fest, a dozen people were amazed at the new children's book, but it was still hard to sell. Why do you think that was?

The best explanation I have is that with this being a children's book, the visitors who came to the fest were mostly adults, and even though some brought kids along, it seemed they were interested in books for themselves.
Now, I will say that some kids were pretty young. Maybe a bit too young for a chapter book, but seemingly too old for a small, little book about a barking puppy...
Now, am I saying that this book was too immature for its own audience? No, what I am saying is that the audience wanted something older for their young readers.
So, for instance, it wouldn't be a book for a first grader because a first grader would have already read a book like this. So it was more for a beginning reader, like a toddler or a kindergartener.
Yeah, there weren't many readers THAT young. But it's ok, because we didn't leave with anything. In fact, let me just say that we are now left with 2 remaining books! So that means that some were sold. Who knows, maybe this book will find the right person soon. It is a good story to tell after all...

December News

Sometimes I sit and wonder what the focus of Creepsmas should be. I mean it's just an spoof of Christmas. I've always seen it as a chace to give presents to young "viewers" but how can they earn it? What's the point? How do I choose who gets a gift?
I think I've figured it out.
We are now the owners of The Scary Creepsmas Giveaway. This is only for #1 fans. And #1 fans are the fans who can read secret messages from Shiver and Fears. But how do we choose #1 fans?... THE DRAWING CONTEST! OF COURSE!! Anyone who enters the drawing contest, winner or loser can get a chance to be a number one fan. not quite sure how well this will go this year. I mean, we have done something like this before, but it didn't last long, we lost our fans after some time. What a bummer!
So what makes this different? Well, let me start off and say there were no secrets, but hardly anyone knew what Shiver and Fears had to offer. It was all about checking the websites, the social medias, the blogs.
No, no more. We inform about everything now. We don't depend on the internet to spread the word. We're starting small, but hopefully we can grow over time.
Now, what's going on now? The Scary Creepsmas Giveaway, and at this moment every number 1 fan has done their duty as a fan and spread the Christmas cheer to someone special. Now, here comes the best part. Because they've shared the gift of giving, they get a gift of their own.
Now, as much as I would like to tell you what this gift is... I can't because just in case I have a number 1 fan reading this blog right now, I can't let them have the reveal win.

Now, what is coming after this Christmas? Well get this.. The Author Fest. Now the Author Feast will be in April, but to think. Registration starts now??? Wow! I always think there is a moment o peace with my work... but there never is.

13th Bookaversary Plans

It's been 13 years since the day Shiver and Fears was founded and became a popular icon to most people. But here's the drill on what's happening for the bookaversary and why it's a fuss this year.

Things have been difficult because for one thing money has been tight. Secondly, things haven't gone as planned. In fact, I think the most successful plan was a year or so after the quarentine of 2020. We set up a quick drive by with little gifts to give to our fans.

This year the plan was going to be simple. We weren't going to focus on fans or attracting new people, this year we were going to call some friends and host a pool party... Well- that was the plan...

The plan was simple, go to my brother's apartment and swim at the pool. Eat some food and play some Jackbox games... The thing about the world is plans get changed whether you want them to or not.

First of all, my brother moved into a new house. An area without a pool. So my mission was to call my aunt, figured she had an idea... Nope, not at all. she'd be out for the whole month... Now, you might start to see where the fuss is coming in.

My official plan was to just have a simple BBQ. That was a simple solution, but the thing about simple solutions is that sometimes you get help and they go over and beyond to do so.

Long story short, this simple BBQ is now a BQQ party with Shiver and Fears gifts and books to give to every guest along with a game for someone to win a Shiver and Fears prize.😣😣So now I have 2 weeks to find prizes and gift with what I have available as well as come up with a guest list...

Bookaversaries only come once a year, and sometimes the simple answer isn't the correct answer. But luckily I can make it work!

In the meantime, do me a favor. Go up to the closest icy station and get yourself a Shiver and Fears Chill Out Cone (Silver Fox with Blue raspberry) and share it with your followers, and comment what you think.
Happy 4TH of July folks!

What's Happened in May?

Have I really let a whole month go by without  blogging? You bet. This is a very important season for the Shiver and Fears crew. We have many things to work on, not to mentions we have other things to work on too.

What, you may ask?

Before I start answering that question, watch this VIDEO.

Now you know as well as everyone else that this is the month of graduation. Which means tons of hard working student have made an accomplishment, and as a teacher I have to attend. I have watched these students make great progress and happy for them too.

Next I still have 4 more chapters to work on this book! Magical Times new book is almost done, and it's slowly making progress because of all these other things to do. A.J. and C.J. are trying to figure out the issue with Ian and their powers. When will these 4 chapters ever be done?

Well, hopefully soon. That is if a friend of mine quits asking and begging to play games. Now, I enjoy a good game. But I can't focus on the work that needs to be done, if I keep being asked to play everyday! Now, I know you're saying "Just tell him no." Well you watched that video I showed earlier? It might explain why.

Shiver and Fears team is working with a few new people this year and are trying to get things set.

But one thing is for sure, The monster contest will have some great entries this year, so be ready. We almost are!

Find the Giggling Ghost

If you are reading this blog, that must mean you were at the AuthorFest at the Enid Library! Otherwise, you're reading this because you like a good story. Well, either way, listen.

If you were at the AuthorFest, then you must have purchased a book with a Giggling Ghost sticker in it. Well, congratulations! You have won a free supply of AJ Hard audio book collection. Want to know how to claim that prize? Of course you do! Well then follow these instructions:

  1. Take a picture of the Giggling Ghost sticker.

  2. Email the picture to shiverandfears@gmail.com with "BOO IS LAUGHING WITH (your name/nickname here)" as the Subject
  3. You will receive an email back within the week that will include a list of codes to redeem or give to a friend.
  4. Go to audible.com/acx-promo and type in each code to redeem each book you wish to claim
  5. Check your AUDIBLE LIBRARY for your claimed books and enjoy.
If you don't have the Giggling Ghost sticker but have bought a book, don't fret. You have a free audio book too... You see that bookmark? Yeah, it should have a code on it. Type in that code to claim YOUR audio book! Wow, so it's a win-win for everyone.

Now here are some things you'll need to know. Just in case there are some struggles:
  • For one thing, you must have an account with Audible to claim your collection of books. So if you don't have an Amazon account, your books are on hold.
  • Secondly, you can't claim two of the same books, so if one of your codes isn't working, that must mean you already own it the audiobook.
  • Next, be sure to go through your code list before your code on the bookmark. A code might have been provided by the UK which requires a different link here
  • Lastly, any questions can be answered by email at shiverandfears@gmail.com
Thank you for coming to the annual Enid AuthorFest. We have a few other contests and events coming up so be sure to follow and like our social media to get the heads up on our next event!

Enid AuthorFest of 2025

So coming up this April is the Enid Author Fest. It's one of my favorite events of the year. Dozens of authors come and present their books to sell to new viewers... Wait. You should know about this, I talk about it every year...

Wait, are you new?? Ok, well here is a link about it, HERE. Anyway, I want to talk about what I have planned for the AuthorFest this year.

Shiver and Fears is taking a break this year... Oh yeah, I've said that too. Ok, ok. So the books we will be presenting are The Origin: The story that explains the start of the whole magical twins thing:

Although this is the 7th book of the series, Magical Times. It doesn't really affect the order of the series. This book is a prequel to the whole series and will answer most questions people tend to have after reading the first book.

Next, we have the first book, In a Deal of a Situation, which starts the book series. It introduces all the characters you will learn to love and hate while reading the book.

Both of these books have been republished by Ingram Spark which is the reason why, although I'm taking a break from it, one of Shiver and Fears' books is also to be sold at the signing.
Shiver and Fears: There's a Ghost in My Film is the first Shiver and Fears book to be published by Ingram and is being introduced at the signing.
Now, although you can come and purchase the book at the AuthorFest, it is perfectly fine to purchase this book at your local retailers such as Walmart, Barnes and Noble, and Book A Million (If those still exist)
But, do know. We will have a few other things to share at the AuthorFest. Each book purchased at the event will be a free audiobook provided by Audible and visitors will get a free open chance for free merch, whether or not a book is purchased.
But, I encourage you, wherever you live- Kansas, Kentucky, Texas. Take a trip to Enid for the AuthorFeast. Dozens of authors would be pleased with your appearance!

New Year, New Trades

Things have been running a bit different lately. Videos aren't as popular as they use to on youtube. They seem to be catching attention on TikTok, but Content ideas are slim. Check this one out yourself CLICK FOR VIDEO. Meanwhile books have been traveling to many places, and even though Walmart has added Magical Times to their website, they rejected adding it to their shelf.
Walmart has been getting on my nerves lately, just a few weeks ago, I ordered some equipment in December. Not only did I get it late in January, but the picture was NOTHING like what I received. I was completely tricked. It was obviously an online seller trying to sell a useless device.
Anyway, that's a whole different story. Magical Times is now spreading to more countries and states. In fact, a few books has sold over time. That was new!
Another thing that I have noticed is that music is becoming more noticeable. "On the Shelf" has gotten a couple of views, Although when I brought up the Valentine song, everyone seemed to turn their heads. As catchy as it is, and as close as Valentine's Day was, not one was interested in playing it.
Meanwhile, I'm sure you've heard about the snow attacking our states. It might become Shiver and Fears next hit. "Shiver and Fears: Trapped with Cabin Fever"
You might not think that's seems scary. Well, you don't know the story. And believe me, it's not as easy of a plot as you think.

Meanwhile, a new channel has arrived a while back. J.U.S.T Got Game. Have you heard of it? Let me just say, Shiver and Fears is not my only channel I work with.

Tough Butter

I wasn't really planning on doing a blog story today. But this had to be announced, because I can't hold this information any longer. Before I tell you what it is that's got me pacing the floors, let me tell you what's rolling through my mind first.
So this month is the author Fest at Enid Library. If you've seen any posts on social media you know I've been bringing this up for a while now. It's almost getting to the point of being annoying. But you can understand the concern when you've made an announcement about this and you end up questioning if anyone has seen it. Let me tell you, Facebook keeps no record of views, just likes and that's not much since facebook mostly presents to close related people. Let's talk about Instagram. That is a site that might get attention, but only for popular information, funny clips, and celebrity content. It seems to only reach out to those who have a relation to the topic, and (correct me if I'm wrong)  new author's don't have a place in that. Youtube does no good. Once again, it's mostly the attention for movie/ tv buffers, pointless "funny" clips, video games, and sometimes music.
Lastly there is TikTok. Now you an get away with a lot on Tik Tok. But it's mostly for good laughs.
What is the point of all this bashing on different social medias? This all leads to the point I'm trying to make about what it takes to get attention from an audience from social media. It's the quick terms that seems to spread out the most. Those are the videos that stand for about 60 seconds or less. Hard to get full information of that. Reels seem to spread pretty far, but they only seem to spread to the best categorized audience. Which of course are for those who make pointless funny videos.
Now this is coming from experience. Because some videos reach to 200 views, others reach to 1000. What makes them different? What your audience care about more. Art, TV, and jokes. At least, that's what I tend to notice.
This all leads to the question of who is interested in the Author Fest in Enid?

Now that's half of the story. If you want more, read the next blog, coming tomorrow!

Bookaversary of 2023

Now comes another year of Shiver and Fears as it makes it's 11th appearance for a bookaversary gathering.
This year Shiver and Fears is planning to host the book signing event at
Literati Press Bookshop. At this moment right now we are chatting with the store owner about making plans there, But I ask that you stay tuned for more information, or just in case plans change. For if we can not host at the press bookshop, I will be hosting it at the Shiver and Fears headquarters.
My plan for this year is to have pens to sell for $2.50 (yep, the price went down!)
At this time now I will be taking pre-orders for Shiver and Fears hand-crafted books copies. As of right now, only 3 books are available to choose from.
  • The Skeleton Dinner
  • Walking in My Shoes
  • Don't Mock a Witch
These books only cost $10. Payment will be accepted at the signing. (Location still pending) Be sure to stay tune with me at social medias such as Instagram, and YouTube @Shiver and Fears. You can pay in cash or by cash App or PayPal.
I am also including a photo shoot with Boo the Ghost. No, there is not a photo area and Boo is NOT some guy in a costume. If you want to find out how to take a picture with Boo, you'll just have to show up and find out! Just know, Boo is a ghost, so you can't see him when you want to!
Something else I'm planning for the book event is a give-a-way for Shiver and Fears mugs. Maybe I'll sell them too, not quite sure yet.
Be on the look out for any news about Shiver and Fears bookaversary!

How did the book signing go?

So i will admit, the book signing at Barnes and Noble was a little different than I thought. Maybe it had something to do with how some people got the address wrong. Or maybe it was because so many people had other things to focus on.

Whatever the reason is, the book signing went great! Although there's a very interesting story to go with this amazing moment:

A guy came in that day and bought a book, after he purchased it he returned to get it signed with some great news! Not only did he buy that one book, but he also bought a total of 10! One for himself and the other 9 were to be given to the next visitors!

Here is the funny part. When he came and told me this. I thought he bought 10 more extra books from the store. That I could have and give to other people... So, what ended up happening is the customers after him were still purchasing books that I didn't know were already purchased!

Now that I realized this mistake, I had to make this right, I called the store and asked for 10 books to be free of charge since the once I sold were already purchased.... hmmm. Tha is correct, right? I mean to have about 16 books (just setting the example) and having 10 of those books bought, then reselling them. But getting 10 books to give away does balance the cost... Right?

Well anyway, now i have to prepare for ANOTHER book signing. This November 12th. If you didn't come to the first one, I suggest you make time for the second!

Is the code working?

QR codes are complicated. Right now, I had to create and send a new QR Code invitation to everyone. The other one was expired. Now I've sent this code to dozens of people, and only a few answered and were able to see the invitation.
The Bookaversary! Oh snap, I almost forget to mention the most important thing! We will have gift bags, but we'll only have a total of 40. So our first 40 guests will recieve a giftbag, while guest number 41 (whoever that will be) will sign the card, and enter in the drawing contest- no, not like art drawing!
Each guest who wish to enter in the give-a-way with write down their name and email. then on Bookaversary day, I'll announce the winners on Youtube, and email them to send an address to give the gift to.
Each winner (only 2 winners) will get a hand print of a Shiver and Fears book and a shirt. Woo! I'm tired just from thinking about all that. Another thing I'm working on is getting the two Monsterfied winners to show up.
With our unmasked creature be present? We'll see.
Until then, scan that code and comment if it works.

The Results are In

The new book of Shiver and Fears is starting. Meet Carter Fuller, Aria Wilson, Mya Ivory, Cristal Lopez, Angelique Boyd, Nhayla Garcia, Jacob Huerta, and Jalynn These kids are involved in the new book Terror Tales: Into the Legendary Store.

Before, it was call The Creepy Store, but I think the Legendary Store is better. I mean each story hosts a legend given to each kid. Now before, I was only going to write 7 short stories. But Jalynn had to be added. Her story "The Loud Giant" was too interesting to pass.

So how can a story with 7 stories include an 8th person? Well, for one thing; I'm the author, so what I say goes. Secondly, Jalynn story will get a pause within the book. So now and then the book will run back to the story, giving more details on the whole book.

What's interesting about this book is it is the first book where different stories will connect as one. Kind of like the movie Shorts but only it's in order and not jumbled up.

Now, another Shiver and Fears book did something different once where the plot split between two people within the entire book. (not to confuse it with The Beast Within the Bed) But that's because of the plot twisted needed in the book.

Shiver and Fears doesn't do stuff like that often. However, if you go through Magical Times books they split through different characters all the time. Just because so many things are happening between the characters and needs more focus at the time than others.

Back to Shiver and Fears new book. While I work on this book and clean it up afterward, because doing this is going to be a total mess, another book will be worked on called That's a Story! It's about short stories made by 3rd graders. How many 3rd graders will write a story? I guess will have to see. Are you ready for this creative plot?

Author live in person

School is finally out for this teacher, and what a month of work. Just earlier Shiver and Fearshad been presented in front of young readers of the grade of 3rd. After reading An Old Bite, A Puppet Family and a summary of The Ghost of Future Me, students were wowed with dozens of questions. Even the teachers were amazed with the story behind Shiver and Fears.
Throughout the week, I was no longer known to those kids as a teacher they've seen in the hall. I was now Mr. AJ Hard, the teacher who published books. Although, it's ashame. Today 4 of our student will be making their way to 5th grade. Them and the other 8 never knew this about their own teacher! Why were they never told? It wasn't because I was ashamed or anything. It was because I didn't want to lose the realationship I already had with them.
To those students of mine I was a teacher and I wasn't ready to advance that title, not just yet. Although I did think, maybe if I had shown them one of my books, maybe they would better understand  how a book is formed.
Anyway, I hope that next year  Shiver and Fears can reach out to more students. In fact my plan is to have a book published by the school, for the school. But we'll have to see what this year holds for us!

The Answer to Your Question

Saturday I told you about why I'm not too concerned about editing. You might disagree with my choices, If you do, then understand you haven't left a comment post, so I assume I'm correct!
Now the question I left you with earlier is why am I going after adults when Shiver and Fears is for young readers? Here's your answer:
Who buys books online? Who handles mostly all the money? How many kids themselves have a social media account? Now, you might have an answer I can't disagree with, but once again, no comment means I'm correct.
The answer is mostly parents. Parents spent time shopping online and on social media, parents have hold of all the money (given the choice and give some to their child) So even if I can convince 5 kids to buy a Shiver and Fears book, they wouldn't be able to without a request to their guardian.
There's also another reason too, I grew up reading Goosebumps, it was my choice in reading for years. Now that I'm an adult I try to reach out to other adults my age who have a big chance of loving goosebumps as well. Because if they love Goosebumps, Shiver and Fears might interest them as well. Although they are the ones who would read and complain about grammar, it's important to understand editing isn't as free as publishing or as simple as social media promotion.
It's important to realize authors do their best and judging more on minor spelling and grammar mistakes than the story itself is very poor judgment to me and anyone else who wants to be a simple writer.
In fact, come back later this month and I'll show you how well a story can be told with minor mistakes!

Kyle Massey in the House!

2 months ago, Shiver and Fears published their audiobook starring Kyle Massey. Let me start by introducing Cory with this video:

So in honor of this occasion we placed him in our book No Body Park. Kyle Massey visits his aunt for a few days and noticed an empty park. If there's a park then where are the kids who play on it, it's a mystery Kyle wants to solve, but is he ready for the truth?
Think it's an interesting story? Want to read it? Well after waiting all these months you finally can. For the next two months we are giving away audiobook codes for audio copies of No Body Park. Our narrator Diontae Black was excited not only that he gets to read a Shiver and Fears book, but also one that stars Cory in the House, Kyle Massey.
If you want one, this give-a-way starts now! Comment why you want a Shiver and Fears audiobook and we'll send you one, while supplies last.

BTW: we also have a special guest coming this spring. Let's just say he's a friend of Creeps...

New illustration

Well anyway, if your looking at the cover and thinking it needs some work, you're right. 2 weeks ago I chatted with a young artist, Randon Timberlake, and he's agreed to do the illustration for the books. Here is our book now:
I did the coloring, but the drawing came from my partner. If you read this book, you might notice some flaws in the writing. Well, the first few books I've written, I wasn't too focused on paragraphs. But after a few years, it grew on me. I'll get work on that later, right now I'm trying to finish A Puppet Family. At this moment right now I have 4 chapters to finished, send it to y editing partner, Cody, and then Randon will draw the cover. Want to know what his creative side is like? I do too. You'll see in Shiver and Fears 27th series.

Real Life Story

So, in 7 days Shiver and Fears will be in Edmond signing copies of "The Chill House" Now understand I've done my part. I've sent a collection of email, text messages, social media posts. Now in this whole process tell me, who are the first people who are suppose to know about this? I'm sure there are many answers, but the answer I'm looking for is family. Your mom, dad, uncle, aunt, cousins those are the people I think should be the first to know about the book signing, and I think they should also be the one who wouldn't miss it for the world. I mean unless their out of state which for me is 3 quarters of my family.
Now, here is the part of the story that not only confuses me, but upsets me a little too. So let's all agree family is suppose to be the first in line. You know, the first to know about you public appearance. For me, that would be my mother. She calls herself the "number 1 fan" for obvious reasons. The parents are the number 1 fans because they created you, they've known you since birth, they now about you from beginning to end. That's fine, but if my "number 1 fan" is truly my number one fan why am I getting a call (after all the texting, emails, social media posts) from this fan asking why wasn't she told about this event?
Before you start thinking of the reasons, let me first say, the first people who got the 411 was the family! Yes, this would include the cousins, uncles, aunts, mom and dad. Now let me also include that I was repeatedly sending this message early in June. By now I'm getting "OH WOW, CONGRATS", "GOOD LUCK", "I'LL TRY TO MAKE IT", "I'LL BE THERE" ect. And then I get a call  from my "number 1 fan" asking "when is it?" "where's it at?"  "Why did you tell me?" Information that I REPEATEDLY posted, texted, and emailed.
Now you know about connection growth, right? That how information can grow the more people you tell. Information doesn't grow when it's not spread. Now you only know 5 people, ok? That's not going to start a crowd, but those 5 people know you 5 people and 5 others. In a total that's 30 people. Now those 25 others people told know a few people as well, so it just grew some more! ... Well my "number 1 fan" hasn't really told anyone, not to mention, she can't tell anyone because she doesn't know anything about it. You know, about the event that was post, and emailed, and texted.Image result for gif forehead slapNow if you're not understanding the struggle here, then this GIF is for you as well.
Do me a favor, bring your friends, tell your family, spread the word. "AJ Hard is having a book signing at Best of Books" If you don't, you're no better than my "number one fan".

Best of Books starring Shiver and Fears

For the first time ever Shiver and Fears is having a book signing at a book store. Edmond's Best of Books will have Shiver and Fears for 11 to 12:30. The author AJ Hard (that's me) will be selling the book The Chill House for $8. However, in order to get a free book signed  you can bring your own Shiver and Fears product here or maybe you just want a book signed, get one here.
But whether you get a hat autographed, The Chill House, or any other Shiver and Fears book/ product just know your support is what matters. You might be wondering why did I choose Best of Books all the way in Edmond. The answer is I didn't, they chose me. I was offering a collection of Shiver and Fears books to the store and they asked if I would be interested in having a book signing there.
Sorry to say through, it'll be the  first and maybe the last. Do understand in order to place a book signing it takes at least $100 to  order a collection of books to give/sell to others. Now I'm not completely sure but I think a book store provides those copies. Well, not in my case. I have to provide copies and really that's not easy for me. Raising money is not my strong point, it never was, not even in elementary school when we were selling candy bars.
Now if you're reading this and want to help. I know for sure there are a few people you know who would jump up to the fact an author is making an appearance in Edmond. And it's not just me who'd be getting help, Best of Books would be getting attention as well. I mean celebrities at a book store? How cool would that be. Not to mention I can only connect with my friends, but you can connect with others in the world and if each person who help promote this event to their friends and family then Best of Books will get a lot of attention. And you can say, "I helped with that!"
